Australia is a popular place to refit, maintain and repair superyachts. Visiting yachts can access skilled tradespeople, experienced shipyards and specialist suppliers around the country, and several major refit hubs sit below the cyclone belt, making them a safe place to complete work while the north is in its wet season.

Customs and tax: what to know before your refit

  • Dry dock and voyage status: a superyacht cannot keep its continuous international voyage status while in dry dock. If the work is extensive, the yacht may need to be exported, or entered for home consumption for repair and export. A security may be required for any duty. Talk to the Australian Border Force or your agent before the yacht is hauled out. See Clearance Options.
  • GST-free repairs and refits: repairs and refits to a foreign yacht visiting on a Control Permit can be GST-free. Give your repairer a copy of the Control Permit and make sure the work is completed within the permit period. See Taxation.
  • Duty-free parts: goods imported to repair superyachts over 150 Gross Construction Tonnes have a free rate of duty. Parts for a yacht on a Control Permit must be entered for home consumption, with duty and GST paid, before delivery.

Planning your refit

  • Book early: yard slots fill quickly before and during the northern wet season, when many yachts head south.
  • Plan around the seasons: refit hubs below the cyclone belt are a safe place to be from November to April.
  • Check your clearance status: confirm your customs arrangements before work starts, especially for dry docking.
  • Crew visas: make sure crew visas cover the length of the refit. See Visas for Crew & Guests.
